How to Make a Darth Vader Costume

How to Make a Darth Vader Costume
If you want to step out this Halloween dressed like the Dark Prince, you have three choices.  You can order a full Darth Vader replica costume online, you can try to find one at a local store, or you might just ask  how do I make a Darth Vader costume myself.
A costume for this larger than life bad guy could be just as complicated as his own life story seems to be.  His ominous black cloak and sinister helmet are extremely detailed and hard to duplicate for a do it yourself project.  There are a few things you could try and hopefully get at least close enough to the look that those generous folks dishing out the candy will actually know who you are supposed to be.
The first thing you must have is a good image or photo to work from.  This will help you cover all the details of the costume. Getting a sewing pattern for Darth Vader costume can save you a lot headache.

Now it’s time to put together whatever items you have or can borrow to make this costume look authentic.  A life size Darth Vader costume is huge…so you’re going to need to bulk up.  You could use hockey or football equipment under dark clothing to accomplish this.  Be sure to use a dark hoodie for your top because the hood will become part of the headpiece.
Then you need a dark cape.  If you don’t want to buy one, some heavy dark fabric can quickly be fashioned into a cape.  Wear this over your dark clothing and sport armour.
You can also use a sport helmet as a base for your Vader helmet. Using your photo as a guide, cut cardboard pieces to form the larger shape and attach them to the sport helmet, or you can make a headpiece totally out of cardboard and wear it over your hoodie.  Use face paint to make your face black, or better yet, use black mesh or light fabric to hide your face completely.
Now you’re ready to add big black gloves and boots and a light sabre if you have one.  Then all you have to practice is your evil raspy breathing!
There will likely be a lot of trial and error involved with learning how to make a Darth Vader costume, so be sure to start well ahead of the big day!
